When do the aspens turn in Colorado?

The answer to this question varies depending on your location. Many people think that our home state is only famous for its ski resorts. While the purple mountain’s majesty is one of the most beautiful views during the winter season, the changing leaves showcasing the colors of autumn are also a treat to behold.

Generally speaking, September and October are the prime months to see Colorado’s aspen trees shift in color. With sunny mornings and cool evenings, leaves begin changing as the days get shorter in the fall. The last few weeks of September and first couple of weeks of October is the perfect time for driving out to explore the state and enjoy the beautiful scenery that Colorado has to offer!

While the entire state boasts gorgeous views, it can be hard to find the most breathtaking spots when there’s five different climate zones within a two-hour drive of downtown Denver. With such a variation in the temperatures, where are the best places to see fall colors around Denver?

Premium Leaf-Peeping Spots Near Denver

We want to make sure your next fall adventure is as stress free as possible, so we compiled a list of our favorite places to watch the leaves turn from Denver to Aspen.

  • Thousands of people flock to Denver in the fall, but it’s hard to beat the fresh air and vibrant foliage of the High Line Canal. The canal, which comprises a 71-mile trail that runs along the South Platte River, is lined with old cottonwood trees that turn into a brilliant yellow in the fall. If you’re looking for some serious fall color, this is one place worth visiting.
  • Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park features numerous high aspen groves around Bear Lake, located about one hour and 30 minutes from Denver. The park is a wonderful place to see the fall colors, with many hiking trails perfect for leaf peeping.
  • Located only 20 miles west of Denver in the foothills, Golden Gate Canyon State Park is known for its stunning views of the Rocky Mountains and aspen groves.
  • Denver’s City Park is more than just a place for picnics, boating and azalea-lined gardens. The area is home to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Denver Zoo and several lakes — as well as the Mile High Trail.
  • If you love stunning Colorado scenery and wildlife, check out the newest state park west of Denver. Beautiful Staunton State Park is located just 40 miles southwest of Denver.
