As a nonprofit devoted to educating Coloradans on the state’s unique fiscal challenges, we get that question almost every time now. It doesn’t matter what group we’re talking to about the state budget or which community in Colorado we’re visiting.
Ever since recreational marijuana became legal, there has been a seemingly unstoppable urban myth going around that the state is positively swimming in tax revenue from pot sales.

Boulder pot businesses cited for breaking advertising ban
City code allows only for ‘incidental’ advertising in connection with charitable sponsorships

Two Boulder marijuana businesses stand accused of violating the city’s ban on pot advertising because they had booths at Out Boulder’s Pridefest celebration last month.
The stores didn’t distribute marijuana at the booths, but they did feature large signs featuring the names of the businesses, The Farm and Terrapin Care Station.

A Provision of the TABOR tax refund bill is that on September 16th of this year there will be a one day state special and excise tax rate of 0%. On September 16 no special 10% sales tax will be assed on retail sales. Ordinary state sales tax of 2.9% as well as all Boulder taxes remain in effect.
